Universal screening, local norms, and broader conceptions of giftedness have helped schools find students whose potential might otherwise have gone unnoticed (Peters et al., 2014).</p><p>These advances matter. However, in some cases, identification has become the measure of success rather than the starting point for service. As gifted education researcher Scott Peters often asks:</p><p><strong>Identifying them for what?</strong></p><p>It is a deceptively simple question. A district may identify more students. A school may improve representation. A screening process may become more equitable. Researchers in gifted education, talent development, and educational psychology consistently emphasize that student growth results from access to appropriately challenging learning experiences&#8212;not from the assignment of a label (NAGC, 2019; Rogers, 2007; Subotnik et al., 2011). Identification may open the door, but programming, instruction, and opportunity determine what happens after students walk through it. Identification is important. But identification alone does not develop potential.</p><p>Educational systems naturally gravitate toward what is easiest to measure. Identification rates are measurable. Demographic representation is measurable. Screening participation is measurable. Talent development is much harder to quantify. As a result, schools may unintentionally confuse a process metric with an outcome. A district can report how many students were identified. It is much more difficult to demonstrate how many students experienced sustained intellectual growth because of the services they received.</p><p>This distinction matters. Peters and colleagues (2014) argue that equitable identification should be viewed as a mechanism for connecting students to appropriate educational opportunities. Finding students is essential, but finding them is only the first step. When identification becomes the goal, schools risk celebrating access while neglecting what students actually experience after they gain it.</p><p>Research on gifted education has consistently found that advanced learners benefit when instruction is aligned with their readiness and learning needs. Rogers' (2007) synthesis of gifted education research found positive effects associated with acceleration, curriculum compacting, ability grouping, and other forms of instructional differentiation. Similarly, Kulik and Kulik's (1992) meta-analysis found that grouping practices designed to provide appropriately challenging instruction produced positive academic outcomes.</p><p>The implication is straightforward. Students grow because of what they experience, not because of what they are called. A gifted label does not increase challenge. A gifted label does not increase complexity. A gifted label does not create growth. Appropriate educational experiences do.</p><p>Perhaps the strongest challenge to the identification trap comes from the talent development literature. For much of its history, gifted education focused heavily on discovering talent. Increasingly, however, researchers have argued that the more important work is developing it.</p><p>Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius, and Worrell (2011) proposed a shift from viewing giftedness as a fixed trait to understanding it as potential that requires cultivation. They argue that high achievement emerges through opportunities, instruction, mentorship, deliberate practice, and sustained challenge. Worrell and colleagues (2019) extended this argument, suggesting that the central purpose of gifted education should be talent development rather than talent identification alone.</p><p>This perspective fundamentally changes the conversation. Instead of asking: Who have we identified? We begin asking: How are we developing the talent we have identified? One question focuses on access. The other focuses on outcomes. Both matter.&nbsp; But only one directly addresses potential.</p><p>Plucker, Hardesty, and Burroughs (2013) describe the consequences of failing to develop advanced potential as an "excellence gap" problem. Across the country, many students demonstrate the capacity for advanced achievement but never receive the opportunities, challenges, or support necessary to fully develop their talents. In other words, talent can be found and still remain undeveloped. A student may be identified and still fail to grow. A school may successfully locate potential and still fail to nurture it. The work is not finished when talent is discovered. The work begins there.</p><p>The history of gifted education includes a long and necessary effort to identify students whose abilities were overlooked. That work remains important, but finding students was never the ultimate goal - developing their potential was.</p><p>The success of a gifted program is not measured by how many students enter it. It is measured by what happens after they do. As schools continue improving identification practices, they should continue asking the question Scott Peters has challenged the field to consider:</p><p><strong>Identifying them for what?</strong></p><p>Because potential is not developed when it is recognized. In practice, MTSS frameworks have improved the visibility of academic struggle, behavioral need, and intervention response. Students who fall below expected benchmarks are increasingly identified through structured systems of screening, monitoring, and support. The system knows how to respond when performance declines. It is far less clear what happens when readiness exceeds the instructional target.</p><p>Most MTSS structures are visually and operationally represented as triangles. The base contains core instruction, while increasingly intensive layers of intervention are designed to respond to deficit and unfinished learning. But this framing reveals an underlying assumption within many systems: support flows almost exclusively downward toward remediation. In reality, learner variability does not form a triangle. instructional needs diverge in multiple directions, not one. Some learners require support because they are struggling to access grade-level content. Others require support because grade-level content no longer represents an appropriate level of challenge. Both conditions represent a mismatch between learner readiness and instructional design. Yet many MTSS systems are calibrated to detect one form of mismatch. This creates an intervention bias.</p><p>Support becomes associated with remediation, while advanced readiness is interpreted as evidence that additional response is unnecessary. Students who require greater complexity, accelerated pacing, abstraction, or depth often remain outside the system&#8217;s field of attention altogether. The issue is not that advanced learners are excluded intentionally. Rather, it is that many systems were never fully designed to recognize growth beyond proficiency as a condition requiring intervention in the first place.</p><p>Research surrounding advanced academic programming and talent development suggests that learners demonstrating advanced readiness require intentionally responsive instructional pathways, not simply continued exposure to grade-level proficiency work (Peters et al., 2014). In classrooms, this often appears when intervention blocks, progress monitoring systems, instructional problem-solving teams, and tiered supports are reserved almost exclusively for students working below benchmark, while students demonstrating mastery remain in unchanged instructional environments. The support system activates downward, but rarely upward.</p><p>This creates another persistent tension within schools: the perception that advanced learners are receiving &#8220;special treatment.&#8221; But framing advanced services within MTSS resolves much of this ambiguity. When advanced learning is understood as part of a responsive instructional framework rather than as enrichment reserved for a select group, the rationale becomes structurally defensible. The question is no longer why certain students receive something different. The question becomes what instructional response is appropriate when evidence indicates a student is already prepared to move beyond grade-level expectations. Within a comprehensive MTSS framework, differentiated response is not favoritism. It is the purpose of the system itself.</p><p>Organizations including the National Association for Gifted Children and CAST (2021) have argued that advanced learners should be fully included within MTSS structures so that responsiveness extends beyond remediation and includes pathways for advanced growth. Over time, however, systems that respond primarily to deficit create asymmetry in access to growth. Students experiencing difficulty receive increasingly responsive instructional design, while students already demonstrating mastery are often expected to continue progressing within static instructional conditions. As a result, growth becomes systematically protected for some learners and incidental for others.</p><p>This constrains potential not because advanced learners stop achieving, but because learning trajectories flatten inside systems calibrated primarily to detect struggle. Every learner is entitled to a year&#8217;s worth of growth though. If MTSS is intended to function as a comprehensive framework for learner response, then responsiveness must extend beyond remediation. Systems must be designed to identify and respond to advanced readiness with the same level of intentionality used to identify and respond to academic struggle.</p><p>Growth pathways should exist in every direction. They complete assignments accurately, they meet proficiency targets, and they demonstrate mastery of expected content. In most instructional systems, this is read as sufficient evidence that learning is ongoing.</p><p>School systems tend to be designed around proficiency thresholds. Once a student demonstrates mastery of a defined standard, the system records success and moves on. What is not built into these systems is a reliable mechanism for distinguishing between prior mastery being repeated and new learning being generated.</p><p>This creates what assessment and psychometric research describes as a ceiling effect&#8212;a condition in which measurement systems, including instructional systems, lose their ability to detect continued growth once proficiency is reached. It functions like a thermometer with an upper limit&#8212;say 80 degrees&#8212;where readings remain accurate up to that point, but beyond it the instrument appears to stop moving. Importantly, this does not mean the temperature stops rising. As a result, performance remains visible, but learning variation becomes increasingly difficult to register. Performance is then treated as a proxy for continued growth, even when the cognitive demand has not changed.</p><p>In classrooms, this often appears when students repeatedly complete work at a consistent level of difficulty with accuracy, without being offered a change in complexity, depth, or abstraction of task. The work remains aligned to the same target, and the performance remains strong, but the instructional design remains unchanged.</p><p>Within a proficiency-centered system, this stability is often interpreted as success rather than as a signal to increase cognitive demand. Over time, high-performing students can remain within stable task structures that no longer extend their learning. What appears as continued success may reflect stabilized proficiency rather than ongoing cognitive development. The ceiling effect means that growth becomes less visible not because it is absent, but because instructional and assessment systems are no longer sensitive to it.</p><p>Learning flattens in visibility before it flattens in reality. And when visibility disappears, the recognition that more complex learning experiences need to be introduced disappears as well. This constrains potential by limiting access to continued challenge at the point where it is most needed for trajectory.</p><p>It deprives students of the year&#8217;s worth of growth they are entitled to.</p><p>Instructional systems must distinguish between demonstrated proficiency and continued learning potential. Evidence of mastery should function as a trigger for increased cognitive demand, not as confirmation that current task structures remain appropriate.</p><p>Systems need to remain sensitive to above proficiency thresholds, ensuring that learning trajectories continue to be visible, measurable, and intentionally extended beyond initial mastery. But he was determined to finish because the class had been promised a dazzling reward the next day. So, an hour before bedtime, a seven-year-old sat at the table being hurried through mathematical procedures far beyond his conceptual readiness&#8212;not because the concepts were meaningful, but because the work had been labeled &#8220;advanced.&#8221; The next day, he earned the mutant-Barbie-ninja-slime-pencil-spinner prize, but very little mathematical understanding remained.</p><p>This is not usually the result of poor intentions. In fact, it often emerges from the opposite. A teacher recognizes readiness, wants to respond appropriately, and reaches for what appears to be increased challenge. In many systems, however, rigor has become synonymous with acceleration into harder procedures rather than deeper cognitive demand. As a result, learners who demonstrate early proficiency are frequently moved vertically before they are allowed to move deeply.</p><p>The classroom signals are subtle but consistent:</p><ul><li><p>larger numbers replacing richer problems</p></li><li><p>additional practice replacing complexity of thought</p></li><li><p>earlier algorithms replacing opportunities for reasoning</p></li><li><p>speed and endurance functioning as evidence of capability</p></li></ul><p>The work becomes harder to complete, but not necessarily more intellectually demanding.</p><p>Research on cognitive demand has long distinguished between procedural difficulty and meaningful mathematical thinking. Tasks that emphasize memorization or procedure without conceptual connection require significantly less cognitive engagement than tasks centered on reasoning, justification, and problem solving (Stein et al., 2000).</p><p>This distinction matters because cognitive demand is not defined by how difficult a task feels to execute. It is defined by the level of thinking required to make sense of it. A learner explaining multiple strategies for composing numbers is engaged in significant mathematical reasoning. A learner mechanically completing forty subtraction problems across zeros may not be.</p><p>When systems misread rigor in this way, growth trajectories begin to flatten. Advanced learners may continue performing successfully while experiencing fewer opportunities for analysis, creativity, generalization, or conceptual transfer. Over time, compliance can replace inquiry. Endurance can replace thoughtfulness. Performance can replace growth. And because the learner appears successful, the design problem often goes unnoticed.</p><p>Research in mathematics learning consistently demonstrates that durable understanding develops through opportunities to construct meaning, examine relationships, and explain thinking&#8212;not simply through exposure to increasingly advanced procedures (Hiebert &amp; Grouws, 2007). Similarly, NCTM identifies reasoning, problem solving, and productive struggle as central features of rigorous mathematics instruction, rather than rote procedural completion alone (NCTM, 2014).</p><p>The issue is not that advanced learners should never encounter advanced content. It is that readiness for complexity is not identical to readiness for abstraction, procedural compression, or acceleration beyond conceptual understanding. Every learner is entitled to a year&#8217;s worth of growth. That principle applies upward as much as it applies downward. Growth requires movement into deeper understanding, not simply movement into older material.</p><p>A more precise system definition of rigor would distinguish between difficulty and cognitive demand. It would recognize that depth, ambiguity, justification, pattern seeking, and strategic thinking often produce more meaningful growth than premature procedural advancement. It would measure the sophistication of student thinking, not simply the sophistication of the worksheet.</p><p>Because rigor is not created by making work heavier. It dims, and most systems aren&#8217;t built to notice dimming, they&#8217;re built to notice failure.</p><p>Every learner is entitled to a year&#8217;s worth of growth. Not just access, or exposure, but actual growth. Anything less raises a harder question about the impact of the learning itself: Is a year of schooling actually producing a year of progress?  Potential isn&#8217;t a switch, so it doesn&#8217;t turn off when it&#8217;s not challenged. A student finishes quickly and waits for the teacher more often. They stop reaching quite as far, although they&#8217;re still successful, and compliant.  Everything looks good, so nothing changes on the outside, but the light inside is different. What once pushed forward begins to settle. What once stretched begins to repeat.</p><p>We would never accept this for a struggling learner. We would intervene, and adjust. Mobilize any and all resources. But for advanced learners, we often call it fine because they haven&#8217;t fallen behind. Research has shown this pattern for decades; when instruction isn&#8217;t matched to readiness, growth stalls, even while performance appears strong (Rogers, 2002). This is how potential gets erased. Not through failure but through gradual reduction: Less stretch. Less risk. Less growth. Until what remains is just enough brightness to meet expectations&#8212; but not enough to expand them.</p><p>The most overlooked gap in education isn&#8217;t just between students. It&#8217;s within them: the distance between where a learner starts and how fully their capacity is allowed to shine. A gap most systems were never designed to measure, only to sort. When systems prioritize uniform outcomes over individual growth, they create a quiet tradeoff. Some students are pushed to catch up while others are asked, without ever being told, to dim. Both are forms of misalignment, but only one tends to get attention.</p><p>The Growth Entitlement Principle doesn&#8217;t require perfection, but it does require honesty. If a student is capable of more growth than they are experiencing,<br>then something in the system is not working even if the data says they&#8217;re proficient. That&#8217;s why modern standards for advanced learners emphasize continuous progress not just attainment, as the mark of appropriate challenge (NAGC, 2019). It&#8217;s about refusing to confuse <em>visible success</em> with <em>actual growth.  </em>It&#8217;s about recognizing that potential is dynamic, and that when it isn&#8217;t extended, it doesn&#8217;t hold steady. It dims. If we are serious about equity, then growth cannot be optional for some and urgent for others.</p><p>So the question isn&#8217;t: <em>Are students meeting expectations?</em></p><p>The question is: <strong>Whose potential are we allowing to shine, and whose have we quietly learned to live with at half-light?</strong></p><p>References</p><p>Hattie, J. Intervention systems activate where need is most visible, and attention follows struggle. And in that logic, the advanced learner disappears from the instructional frame. Not because they are thriving, but because they are not signaling distress. School systems are built to respond to visible need. Failure and gaps are recognized as need, but readiness beyond the system&#8217;s target is not, so when a student appears successful, the system interprets that success as sufficiency. Just as &#8220;fine.&#8221;</p><p>In classrooms, this often looks like students who complete work quickly being asked to wait, assist peers, or continue independently without a redesigned learning target. The instructional structure remains unchanged. Only the student&#8217;s role shifts. Over time, advanced learners are not denied learning outright. They are gradually placed outside of deliberate instructional design, and their growth becomes incidental rather than planned. The trajectory falters.</p><p>It is said that every learner is entitled to a year&#8217;s worth of growth. This is not a fringe practice; it is a feature of how modern classrooms are designed. Large-scale surveys indicate that collaborative learning structures are a routine part of instruction in U.S. classrooms (NCES, n.d.; OECD, 2019). Research syntheses by proponents like Johnson and Johnson (2009) and Slavin (2014) describe these approaches as practical responses to diverse learning needs.</p><p>Within these heterogeneous settings, roles tend to emerge quickly and predictably. Advanced learners are not just participating in group work; they are often positioned as informal leaders, tutors, and translators of content for their peers. It happens naturally, efficiently&#8212;and almost invisibly.</p><p><strong>And yet, something important is being lost in the process.</strong></p><p>When one student consistently takes on the role of explainer, the cognitive work of the group shifts. What appears to be collaboration can quickly become distribution: one student thinking, others following. But learning does not come from following; it comes from grappling.</p><p>As Hiebert and Grouws (2007) argue, <strong>&#8220;</strong>productive struggle<strong>&#8221;</strong> is not an obstacle to learning, but a requirement for it. This effortful thinking&#8212;where students make sense of ideas and work through uncertainty&#8212;is the engine of conceptual understanding. Without it, knowledge remains shallow.</p><p>When advanced learners are positioned as informal teachers, that struggle is often unintentionally removed for others. Explanations arrive too quickly. Paths are clarified before they are wrestled with. By providing the &#8220;right&#8221; path early, the peer tutor facilitates what Manu Kapur (2008) calls <strong>&#8220;</strong>unproductive success<strong>.&#8221;</strong> The struggling learner may reach the correct answer, but because they bypassed the struggle, they fail to build the mental architecture required to solve the problem independently later.</p><p>The result is a quiet inversion of what we say we value.</p><p>Struggling learners are protected from difficulty, while advanced learners are protected from complexity. For the advanced student, this dynamic creates a ceiling. While the system benefits from their utility as tutors, they risk a <strong>&#8220;stalling&#8221;</strong> of their own development (Colangelo, Assouline, &amp; Gross, 2004), trading their right to encounter new, high-level challenges for the role of reinforcing what they have already mastered.</p><p>One group loses access to effort. But as a curriculum strategist, I find my attention increasingly drawn to the ceiling.</p><p>Every environment we build for learning has a limit. For many, that height is appropriate; it offers enough space to stretch and the &#8220;healthy friction&#8221; of a challenge that meets their reach. However, we must consider what happens when a student&#8217;s natural capacity exceeds the dimensions of the room.</p><p>Consider the greenhouse. It is a masterful system designed to protect and nurture a vast spectrum of life. Ferns, orchids, and succulents all flourish within its regulated warmth. But imagine an oak sapling sprouting in that same space. The glass walls, designed to foster growth, eventually become the very thing that stunts it. The oak&#8217;s &#8220;leader&#8221;&#8212;its primary upward shoot&#8212;is not halted by a lack of potential, but by the physical boundaries of the architecture.</p><div invisible compromise. To remain within the system, they must either hunch over to fit the space or stop growing altogether.</p><p>This isn&#8217;t an observation about the relative &#8220;worth&#8221; of one student over another; it is an inquiry into the design of our systems. My work focuses on the architecture of high-ability learning&#8212;not because potential is a finite resource, but because the &#8220;standard build&#8221; of our institutions often lacks the specialized frameworks required to support exceptional capacity.</p><p>Whether in a classroom or outside of the classroom and into our lives, if we do not intentionally design for height, we should not be surprised when the lights go out on a person&#8217;s drive to excel.
